Class News: Week of Sept. 5th

Here's what we will be learning this week:
In Math, we will continue learning about place value relationships (how each place is ten times the other-in a place value chart).  We will review reading and writing numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form, finding the value of numbers, rounding, and comparing numbers.  Students will be assessed on this information next week, tentative test date (Tues., Sept. 13th.)  Students will be given a Chapter 1 Study Guide on Thurs., Sept. 8th.
In Science, we have been learning about Earth's atmosphere and its affect on weather.  We will continue this study while recording and analyzing weather data and recording/analyzing weather data.  We will also discuss cloud types and how these clouds could be used to predict the weather.  Tools such as an anemometer, a rain gauge, a thermometer, and a wind/weather vane will also be studied.
Reading:
This week, we will be reading several texts including, Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo (in students reading textbook), to learn about how to determine central ideas and the author's purpose for writing texts.  We will also dive deep into our understanding of fiction text by making inferences and determining how events/conflicts in a story cause characters to change.
Writing:
We are slowly working through the process of writing narrative essays.  We started by discussing small moments in our lives and will continue this week by choosing one of those small moments as the topic for our narrative essay.  We will also focus on developing characters, the setting(s), and problems in our stories.

Our study of maps and where we are in relation to other places on a map has led us into our study of interactions between cultural groups in North America.  We will learn about how geography influenced/influences cultural practices among various groups of people.
