Class News: Week of 11/21

We have been studying how to divide multi-digit numbers by a single-divisor.  Students are using several strategies to divide: partial quotients, using known multiples, and combining both strategies with their knowledge of place value, expanded form, etc in order to make dividing multi-digit numbers much easier.  After Thanksgiving Break, we will continue our study of division and several division strategies.

In studying Astronomy, students have been learning about tools used to explore space (astrolabes, compasses, telescopes, etc.)  We have been learning how these tools were used to make exploration and navigation easier.  Students will also began researching the effects of Earth's rotation and revolution.

This week and last week, we have taken an analytical approach to reading to an even deeper level!  We examined the text structures and features of various articles as well as discussed/explained why authors would have chosen a particular text structure (or feature) for the given topic.  Perhaps, the author is trying to present an alternative solution by using the text structure of problem-solution so that readers are aware of their options.  Or maybe, the author is trying to convince one to make a choice between two things by comparing and contrasting (telling the pros and cons).  Whatever the reason, students will simply discover that text structures and features are used purposefully.

Students are still exploring the English colony and the lifestyle, government, and economy of the colonists.  This exploration and study will lead us into the fight for freedom from colonial rule by the British-The American Revolution (when we return from Thanksgiving Break).

Writing: We are working on our Informational books.  Students have chosen an informational topic to research and create an informational book about.
