Class News: Week of March 12th

We have been converting customary and metric units of length, capacity, and weight.  We have used equivalent fractions/comparisons/multiplication and division to help us convert customary units of measurement.  In converting metric units, students used the following "KHDMDCM" to help them convert units from Kilograms to grams, Liters to Milliliters, Kilometers to meters, Meters to Centimeters, and Centimeters to Millimeters.  We will continue using the above strategies to convert units including units of time as well as create and interpret line plots to solve problems.  Our test on Chapter 11 (converting units of measurement) is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, March 15th-based on our review tomorrow (3/13) and the level of understanding (of conversions) that students present, the test could be moved to March 16th.

*In addition to our study of converting units, we will study how to find the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals. These concepts (perimeter and area) will not be a part of our Chapter 11 test, however.

Our official study of plants and animals has ended with student discoveries of interesting plant and animal adaptations.  We will, however, continue reviewing plant and animal adaptations using student final animal research projects (Kahoot games, Blooket games, and presentations, etc).

This week, we will also begin our study of Light including how:

1- distance and intensity affects brightness,

2- how visibility relates to light,

3- light behaves (reflection, refraction, and absorption).

We will also study concepts of Sound including:

1-variables that may affect pitch and volume of sounds

2- how vibrations affect pitch and volume of sounds

3-using the above information to define problems related to the communication of information over a distance and design devices or solutions that use sound to solve the problem (SC State Standard:4.P.4B.3:).

Through an analysis of several different types of print and media (short video clips), we have been diving deeper and deeper into the process of writing literary essays.  Students have learned how to write claims/thesis statements about text as well as how to identify examples from the text and their own lives (original thoughts) in order to support claims/thesis statements.  We will continue the process of writing literary essays by learning how to include micro-stories in our essays and refining these essays with introductory and conclusion statements/paragraphs.

Now that we have learned about how our government formed, we have begun discussing the role of Westward Expansion in the creation of our country.  This includes"

1- analyzing policies created in order to promote movement to the West (i.e. purchase of the Louisiana Territory, support of railroad development, etc.)

2- and analyzing the role of environmental and technological impacts during Westward Expansion.
